This is also a good time to re-apply any pre-emergent products such "Snapshot" to your flowerbeds. The first application of this product is usually performed during the spring season. Pre-emergents are remain effective for approximately 90 days and therefore need to be re-applied periodically throughout the year. They function by preventing seed germination from any treated areas. Therefore you should not apply this product to any areas where you may be attempting to start plant material from seeds as it will prevent them from germinating as well.
Avoid planting any new materials this time of year unless they are being installed into a well irrigated area. Frequent droughts and excessive heat this time of year often stress less established plants beyond recovery. Your best bet is to wait until things cool down in the fall.
